House visiting / Lion Dance

Student: Teacher, Gong Xi Fa Cai
Me: (smile) Thank you.
Student: 'cher, give me angpao.
Me: Sorry, I'm not married yet, cannot give.
Student: Teacher alum kahwin?

(pause for 3 seconds)

Student: 'cher... You want to kahwin my brother? He's very handsome.

Hahahaahaaa. I got proposed by my student!

Before I go any further writing my post, just to let you all know that... my parents are back!

Yeah!!! Finally, a decent meal and smelling & guessing what's cooking in the kitchen again!

Can't help but sing... "you ma de hai zi xiang ge bao".
(Children are like precious with their mum around)

And guess what, I just found out that my washing machine IS actually working. It's just that there's another hidden switch that I didn't turn on.

Bugger... I hand-washed 2 buckets of dirty laundry can!

Know what my mum got for me while she's away?

*ta da*

Yes, a pearl white bag with heart stitches all over it and the infamous black & white piggies, and also key chain and erasers of it.

And this is what I told my mum..

Me: Ma ah........ Did you actually forgot the fact that your daughter (me) is 23 years old?
Mum: But I saw it everywhere I go. It's popular.
Me: Ya I know... But, how can you expect me to carry this bag out? Some more got "non-halal" print on it, I can't bring it to school...
Mum: Sing Yan loves it so much and bought so many of them, a bolster, a bag, a .......
Me: Ma.... Sing Yan is 8 years old...

Don't worry, I'll still use it (just to make her happy).

I SMSed Bobby telling him this and guess what he replied,

"My dad bought me a Mashimaro bag when I was 20 years old to put my piano books bringing it to my piano lessons."

And he really used it, because I'd seen him carrying it years ago!

Things we do just to make our parents happy....

Oh anyway, at least mum got me something that I really love.

Crayon Shinchan's comic, volume 45

Hehe. What can I say, I'm a fan of Shin Chan.
Want to see my collection of Shin Chan's comic?

On the second day of CNY, Li Ling invited all of us to her place. Man, her garage is already the size of my house. So sad can...

Group Photo
Ladies (L-R) : King, Theen, Mabel, S.Hung
Guys (L-R): Chris, S. Leong and Stanley

Don't worry, am not blasting the whole entry with group photos having the same face over and over again with different pose and different place.

Bet most of you had seen Lion Dance, but how much do you know about it?

Know what's the first thing to do when the whole troop of Lion Dance people came to your house?

Yes, you give angpao or pay first.
No money, no dance.

Then you light up the long long batang of fire crackers. That's the 'music' the lion dance to.

Then we add more music to it spicing up the atmosphere, the classic "tak tong ciang, tong ciang, tong ciang..." and repeat it over and over again.

Can we just play from CD?
Can cut down human labour and save more angpao money to get the kids played for it.

According to a trusted source, Yao, my neighboring kid who's also part of the lion dance group for some other school, he told me that each of the players are given B$80.00 per day.

If it's true... WAH LAO EH! MORE THAN WHAT I EARN PER DAY!

I think I'm paranoid (blogger). Every time I saw people taking their camera out and start snapping pictures.. the first question that came to my mind is..

"Is he/she a blogger too? Hmmm.. Does he/she knows me?"

Sibeh thick-skin I know.

* * *

The lions had to "sniff" every single corner of the house to bring in good luck, (I say one..not sure if it's true) and this particular one who went upstair (as below) had to reverse it's way out.

They say the head of the lion must face the inner of the house...

Don't ask me why.

Thus there's two person guiding the semi-blind people under the lion. The uncle in front used a whistle to "order" it (like a dog?) and the one at the back make sure it's ass didn't hit anything precious in the house.

Erm...I hope the people inside the pictures don't get offended.

And, please do not take what I said (about the lion dance) seriously, I made it all up.

After "sniffing" every corner in the house, the lions will go back to the front entrance and the owner of the house will 'ask' the lions to peel some fruits, usually mandarin oranges and pomelo.

It's funny thought.. We saw the hands of the people inside the lions reaching out for those fruits and later pass it to the person behind to peel it.

Then later "vomit" the nicely peeled fruits out.

Hmmm.. Can someone try to give them a DURIAN next time?

(Ish, evil eh. Nonnie, please be a good girl this year)

I took quite a number of photos of the lions, and... I made a comic out of it.

Just for laugh. Don't get mad yah.

Hehehehehhehehehheee.

Swee Leong had two different style of hair for the first and second day of CNY. He said he like how the back of it is done and so I took a picture of it.

Me: One..... Two.....
S. Leong: (Turn his head back) Sorry Miss, but my hair can't smile.
Me: *burst out laughing* Oh ya hor! What the hell I count 123 for!

While the rest were gambling playing Black Jack at one of the house, Theen, Swee leong and I made a move first and went to our dear ChaiWen's house.

Everyone, let me show you my best friend of all time.... The girl who hadn't been back to Brunei for 3 years and I missed her so much.

Erm.. we're all a bit anti-social sometimes. We prefer to stay with the old and close friends. So like our friends always say... "It's always you guys and no one else".

The Accountant, Dentist and Teacher

Plus the oil or something engineer

We're in the same class for years and graduated in 1999. Went for our different ways in life and places for further studies and work. And when we get back together, it always felt like we'd just seen each other yesterday.

I wanted to post a picture of us 5 - 10years ago back in our secondaries.
But I think I'll get killed for it.

Went to BSB yesterday again. Pay a visit to Bobby and his friends place.

Only took one picture.

This one, outside his house

Please do not look at Bobby's tummy.

And I know by saying that everyone will take a second look and focus on his tummy.

Errr.. my house is too small and ugly for a lion diance.

Is it true that having lion dance in the house gives and bring good luck and wealth to the house? I also always thought that those people doing the lion dance is for charity like collecting money for good use and those people inside the lion's clothing are volunteering for free.

I always love firecrackers in
Chinese new year till one year i got hit by one so no more. Happy Chinese New year Nonnie.

PS: You got c two of my dogs standing just beside you in the picture of you and me? The black spot is my black dog who is waiting to bite you...i didn't tell you cos i afraid you panic.

Nonnie King said...

Luuee : So hard to train it? If it is, then why are not working hard for it?

Nureen : I know! I'll never get bored of it. I still giggle whenever I read it.

It's nice isn't it, having friends like that? You don't meet often but when you do, it's as if you've been hanging out every single day :)

My fat guy : You kanasai, don't tell me that the dog nearly bite me!
If I got biten I see how you compensate me.

Why you always sound like not very close to me while commenting my blog ha?

Nonnie King said...

Rebbe : I always tease that, that's his six-in-one pac.

I know it's all hard work, you guys need to eat and try not to do any workout just to maintain it.

Keep it up Rebbe!

Sha : Exactly! It makes me feel that sometimes I don't really need to meet new people.

I prefer the old ones.

Boon said they paid $500 for the lion dance. I was like wow. He videoed it using his SE W850i (;P). Now it's in my iPod. I find it funny when the lion spit back the orange peel. Hehe.

And aww that's sweet of your student to offer his brother haha.

Nonnie King said...

Karen : Thanks Karen. In fact, you're the first one to say you like it.

The only person I gave angpao is also my parent actually.

Wardah : $500!!! I'm definitely not paying those money. Lion dance is so funny because it's so... weird. I mean the sniffing, the peeling and the spitting!

My students always said the darnedest thing.
